How it's calculated

  1. Notice in days: last working day = resignation date + number of days − 1, counting resignation day as day 1. Otherwise, it is resignation date + number of days. A week equals 7 days.
  2. Notice in months: add months to resignation date (1 October + 1 month = 1 November), then subtract one day if counting resignation day as day 1 (31 October). If that date isn't in the next month, use the month's last day: 31 January + 1 month = 28 February (29 in a leap year), setting last day as 27 February.
  3. Calendar days include every day, counting weekends and holidays.
  4. Buyout ≈ monthly pay ÷ 30 × days you leave early, minus any leave days the employer agrees to offset.

In India, the notice period is outlined in your offer or appointment letter and the employer's HR policy. Offer letters often specify 30 to 90 days. An employer might accept a buyout or early departure, but is not obligated to; ensure any agreement is documented.

Frequently Asked Questions

How can I calculate my last working day?
Start counting your notice from when you resign. With a 30-day notice and the day you resign as day 1, if you resign on 1 October 2026, your last workday is Friday, 30 October 2026. If the notice starts the next day, it is Saturday, 31 October 2026.
Is one month notice the same as 30 days?
Not necessarily. A month's notice ends the day before the same date of the following month. If you resign on 15 January 2027 with two months' notice, your last day is 14 March 2027 (59 days). For 60 days' notice, it ends on 15 March 2027. If the following month is shorter, the last day of that month applies: one month from 31 January 2027 ends on 27 February 2027.
Do weekends and public holidays fall within the notice period?
This calculator includes calendar days, so weekends and public holidays count. If your contract uses working days, the last day will be later. Check your contract or appointment letter for details on the notice period clause.
What does notice period buyout mean?
It's when you pay your employer for the notice days you skip, allowing you to leave sooner; sometimes, a new employer covers this for you. This calculator uses monthly pay ÷ 30 for a day's pay. If you earn ₹30,000 monthly and leave 20 days early, it costs about ₹20,000; with 5 days of leave deducted, it's ₹15,000. Your contract will specify if basic or gross pay applies.
Can I use my leave to reduce my notice period?
Some employers permit using earned leave to shorten the notice period, while others don't. It depends on your contract and leave policy. Confirm with HR in writing before making plans.
What is the notice period duration in India?
Your offer or appointment letter outlines this. In India, notice periods of 30 to 90 days are common in offer letters, with shorter periods sometimes during probation. To leave sooner, you can request an early release in writing or offer a buyout for the remaining days.
