Basic pay + DA: ₹25,000 a month, growing 5% annually; PF contribution is 12% of total basic pay from both you and your employer; annual interest is 8.25%; starting balance is zero.

By age 58: ₹1,76,75,656 (₹1.77 crore). Your contributions are ₹28,82,316, your employer's EPF contributions are ₹23,87,316, interest earned is ₹1,24,06,024. An extra ₹4,95,000 went to the pension scheme.

How it's calculated

  1. You contribute 12% of your basic pay + DA (or of the first ₹15,000) to EPF every month.
  2. Your employer also contributes 12%. Of this, 8.33% of basic pay up to ₹15,000 (a maximum of ₹1,250 monthly) is allocated to the Employees' Pension Scheme, with the remainder going to your EPF.
  3. Interest is calculated at the yearly rate ÷ 12 on the end-of-month balance after contributions. It's added at year-end, compounding once a year.
  4. Salaries increase once a year by the percentage you enter. Contributions and yearly interest amounts are rounded to the nearest rupee.

The EPF rate for FY 2025-26 is 8.25%, announced in July 2026. If you joined EPF after 1 September 2014 with a basic salary over ₹15,000, you might not be part of the pension scheme; your employer's entire share would then go to EPF, increasing your balance beyond what's shown here.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the EPF interest rate for 2025-26?
The EPF interest rate for FY 2025-26 is 8.25% per year, announced in July 2026. This rate is declared annually, so the calculator uses 8.25% for all future years unless you adjust it.
How is the employer's PF contribution divided?
Your employer contributes 12% of your basic pay plus DA, just like you. Out of this, 8.33% of basic pay up to ₹15,000 a month, or a maximum of ₹1,250, goes to the Employees' Pension Scheme (EPS), with the remainder going to your EPF account. For a basic pay of ₹25,000, the employer's monthly contribution is ₹3,000: ₹1,250 to EPS and ₹1,750 to EPF. Your contribution is ₹3,000, all allocated to EPF.
What will my EPF balance be at retirement?
The amount depends on your basic pay, salary increases, and the interest rate. Starting with a monthly basic pay of ₹25,000 at age 25, with a 5% annual increase and 8.25% interest, it grows to about ₹1.77 crore (₹1,76,75,656) by age 58. From this total, ₹28,82,316 is your contributions, ₹23,87,316 from your employer, and ₹1,24,06,024 is interest.
What if my PF is calculated on ₹15,000 only?
If your employer calculates PF on just the first ₹15,000 of basic pay, the wage ceiling, you contribute ₹1,800 a month, and the employer pays ₹550 to EPF and ₹1,250 to EPS, regardless of your actual basic pay. Using the same scenario, the balance at age 58 would be approximately ₹45.28 lakh instead of ₹1.77 crore.
Is EPF interest taxed?
Interest on your own EPF contributions exceeding ₹2.5 lakh per year is taxable annually. You reach this threshold when your PF contribution goes beyond ₹20,833 per month, which corresponds to a basic pay above ₹1,73,611 per month at 12%. Interest on contributions within this limit is not taxed.
How do you calculate EPF interest?
Interest is calculated monthly on the ongoing balance using the yearly rate ÷ 12. The total for the year is credited to your account annually. This interest then generates more interest the following year. For example, in the first year, interest of ₹2,547 is added to contributions of ₹57,000.
