How to create a resume that gets shortlisted

Recruiters typically skim a resume before reading it thoroughly. Make sure the key sections are easy to find and support your claims with facts.

1. Contact details

Place your full name at the top, followed by a line with your city, phone number, and an email address you check regularly. Use a simple email made from your name, not a nickname. Include a LinkedIn or portfolio link only if it is current. You do not need to include your full home address, date of birth, father's name, or marital status.

2. Summary

Write two or three lines on who you are, what you are good at and the job you want. Name the role and one or two skills from the job post. Freshers can mention their degree and a project or internship; experienced people should lead with years of experience and one result. Skip phrases like “hard-working team player” that every resume has.

3. Experience, with statistics

List jobs and internships starting with the most recent: include job title, company, city, and dates. For each, write two to five bullet points that start with a verb and show results, like “Handled 60 customer calls a day”, “Reduced stock errors by 15%”, or “Trained 4 new joiners”. Numbers make your claims credible and stand out when skimming.

4. Education

Begin with your highest qualification: degree, college, years, and your score (CGPA or percentage). Freshers can add Class XII and Class X; after a few years of work, just the degree will do. Still a student? List the expected year, like “2026 (expected)”.

5. Skills

List the tools and skills the job requires that you can actually use, such as Tally, Excel, SQL, or spoken English. Use the exact words from the job post where true for you, as recruiters and ATS systems look for them. Leave out anything you could not discuss in an interview.

6. Projects, if you're a fresher

If you have little to no work experience, projects are your validation. List college, final-year projects, freelance work, or volunteer activities: what you created or worked on, the tools you used, and the outcome. Include a link to your work (like GitHub, a portfolio, or a live site) if available.

Fresher resume format

A fresher's resume should be one page long, in a single column, arranged in this order:

  1. Name and contact information
  2. Summary (two or three lines)
  3. Projects
  4. Internships and part-time employment
  5. Education, including your scores
  6. Skills
  7. Certifications, languages, and accomplishments

Make your resume suitable for ATS

Many companies and job sites use an applicant tracking system (ATS) that scans your resume text. Follow these rules to ensure it is readable:

  • Stick to a single-column layout with plain text. Avoid using tables, text boxes, photos, icons, and skill bars as they can confuse the software. Every resume created with this builder follows this guideline.
  • Choose standard headings like Experience, Education, and Skills, so the software can easily identify each section.
  • Use the same words for skills and job titles as in the job post, as long as they truthfully represent your experience.
  • Submit a PDF made from text, like those from this builder, or a Word document. Scans or photos of printed resumes aren't readable.
  • Write dates consistently, such as “Jun 2023 – Present”, throughout your resume.
  • Place your name and contact information in the main body of the page, rather than in a header or footer.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this resume builder available at no cost?
Yes. You can create, download, and copy as many resumes as you want. There is no sign-up, no watermark, and no paid download.
Does this resume builder save or share my data?
What you type stays only in this browser on this device, letting you close the page and resume later. It’s not sent to IT & Tech Jobs's servers, and the PDF is generated in your browser too. Clearing your browser data or using a private window deletes it, so save a copy of the PDF.
Which resume format works best for freshers?
A one-page, single-column layout in this order: name and contact info, a two- or three-line summary, projects and internships, education with scores, skills, then certifications, languages, and achievements. Projects and internships go near the top since they show your ability to do the work.
What should be the length of a resume?
One page for freshers and most people with up to about five years of experience. Two pages are fine if you have more relevant experience to the job. Remove anything that doesn’t help in getting the job you’re applying for.
Is it necessary to include a photo on my resume?
No, it's not required for most jobs in India and is generally omitted. A photo uses space and doesn’t inform the employer about your skills. Add one only if requested in the job post. This builder doesn’t add photos, which also keeps the resume easy for ATS software to process.
What does ATS-friendly resume mean?
An ATS (applicant tracking system) is a tool employers use to gather and search through job applications. An ATS-friendly resume is one that the software can process: it uses plain text in one column, standard section headings, and avoids tables, images, or text boxes. Save it as a text-based PDF or Word file. Every resume created with this builder follows these rules.
