How to create a resume that gets shortlisted
Recruiters typically skim a resume before reading it thoroughly. Make sure the key sections are easy to find and support your claims with facts.
1. Contact details
Place your full name at the top, followed by a line with your city, phone number, and an email address you check regularly. Use a simple email made from your name, not a nickname. Include a LinkedIn or portfolio link only if it is current. You do not need to include your full home address, date of birth, father's name, or marital status.
2. Summary
Write two or three lines on who you are, what you are good at and the job you want. Name the role and one or two skills from the job post. Freshers can mention their degree and a project or internship; experienced people should lead with years of experience and one result. Skip phrases like “hard-working team player” that every resume has.
3. Experience, with statistics
List jobs and internships starting with the most recent: include job title, company, city, and dates. For each, write two to five bullet points that start with a verb and show results, like “Handled 60 customer calls a day”, “Reduced stock errors by 15%”, or “Trained 4 new joiners”. Numbers make your claims credible and stand out when skimming.
4. Education
Begin with your highest qualification: degree, college, years, and your score (CGPA or percentage). Freshers can add Class XII and Class X; after a few years of work, just the degree will do. Still a student? List the expected year, like “2026 (expected)”.
5. Skills
List the tools and skills the job requires that you can actually use, such as Tally, Excel, SQL, or spoken English. Use the exact words from the job post where true for you, as recruiters and ATS systems look for them. Leave out anything you could not discuss in an interview.
6. Projects, if you're a fresher
If you have little to no work experience, projects are your validation. List college, final-year projects, freelance work, or volunteer activities: what you created or worked on, the tools you used, and the outcome. Include a link to your work (like GitHub, a portfolio, or a live site) if available.
Fresher resume format

Make your resume suitable for ATS
Many companies and job sites use an applicant tracking system (ATS) that scans your resume text. Follow these rules to ensure it is readable:
- Stick to a single-column layout with plain text. Avoid using tables, text boxes, photos, icons, and skill bars as they can confuse the software. Every resume created with this builder follows this guideline.
- Choose standard headings like Experience, Education, and Skills, so the software can easily identify each section.
- Use the same words for skills and job titles as in the job post, as long as they truthfully represent your experience.
- Submit a PDF made from text, like those from this builder, or a Word document. Scans or photos of printed resumes aren't readable.
- Write dates consistently, such as “Jun 2023 – Present”, throughout your resume.
- Place your name and contact information in the main body of the page, rather than in a header or footer.
